Changelog

This page repeats what the file CHANGELOG.md of the open core says, in short. It adds nothing. The product reports version 2.0 (spec-editor --version), and the file has no entry for it. The last entry in the file is 1.4.0, dated 2026-09-20. Changes after that date are not recorded here.

1.4.0 (2026-09-20)

The entry says it folds all the work since the last public release, 0.2.2, into one. The versions 1.0.0 to 1.3.0 were internal and were never published.

Added

  • A catalog of bundled methodologies and a generator for a new one for a domain. spec-editor init matches your domain against the catalog; the generated file is validated before anything is written.
  • Methodology fields: a declared parent hierarchy per element type, attributes with a schema, roles, and a domain and tags header. spec-editor migrate upgrades an existing project to the current methodology and tooling.
  • An append-only journal of events, stored as JSON lines, with cached projections and read-only MCP tools to query it.
  • Element versions and diffs: every version of an element is stored by content hash, and spec-editor diff shows what a run, a change or an element did. The web interface shows it in a diff panel, and VS Code has a “Show History” command.
  • A data-driven registry of agents and teams, and memory providers for them.
  • Model profile health tracking and a price table that drives cost accounting.
  • A claude-code provider that calls the local Claude Code CLI, signed in with your own subscription, with no API key.
  • Content-addressed storage for element text and attachments.
  • Web interface: the tree on the left doubles as the aspect selector, a grouped view switcher, a diagram you can pan, zoom and drill into, a trace map, element create, edit and delete with a form driven by the methodology, tooltips on controls, resizable panels.
  • VS Code: diff and history commands.
  • Plugin extension points and profiles: SPEC_EDITOR_PROFILE=oss loads the open core alone.
  • A Playwright end-to-end suite for the core flows, and a required CI job that runs the core without any plugin.

Changed

  • The element/changed event gains optional before_hash, after_hash and path fields. Older events still read back.
  • With --json, CLI and MCP output is quieter so that the JSON stays parseable; SPEC_EDITOR_QUIET=1 does the same.
  • The in-memory element index rebuilds only when the files on disk changed.
  • Root element types are taken from the declared parent hierarchy.
  • Plugin discovery is consolidated, and a plugin is no longer registered twice.

Removed

  • Code-repository, run-time operations and delivery-workflow features that shipped in the internal releases moved out of the core into a separate plugin. The open core is a requirements-model editor.

Fixed

  • write_element on an update no longer wipes attributes when the call omits them.
  • A race on a shared temporary file when several writers wrote the first projection cache.
  • A .gitignore pattern for journal/ that also matched the source package of the journal.
  • A legacy agents.yaml written by init was misdetected as the new format.
  • A compile error in the VS Code extension and several lint and type errors.
  • The element index rebuilt under a multi-threaded HTTP server could briefly show zero elements; the swap is now atomic.

0.2.2 (2026-09-01)

The file lists, among others: the Reqs and Agents tabs in the VS Code extension, a consolidated system tool in MCP, a build-artifact element type, and fixes for crashes in background indexing.

Older entries

The file also has entries for 0.2.0 (2026-07-04) and 0.1.0 (marked unreleased). They are not repeated here. For anything newer than 1.4.0, read the commit history of the repository.
